(Rebuilding historical www.sunflowerclub.net site.) Below is a blog entry I like that sunflower grower Walter Bender made. Walter, an MIT professor, co-founded an organization called One Laptop Per Child (www.laptop.org), which developed a laptop for kids in the developing world. I was doing some volunteer work, and for fun, I offered some sunflower seeds to Walter. I had no idea that he had grown sunflowers before, and that the experience of growing them as a child had impacted his interest in science and math. So it was a lesson to me, that perhaps something as simple as growing sunflowers could be a fun way for kids of all ages to learn about science. It has been for me. Walter is now directing a related organization called Sugar Labs (www.sugarlabs.org), which makes an operating system called Sugar. |
